What is a DOT physical exam?
The Department of Transportation (DOT) requires physical exams for some commercial drivers to ensure they’re able to drive safely and meet the requirements of their over-the-road responsibilities. When an employee needs a DOT physical exam:
- Vehicle Weight: Driving a vehicle with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) or Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) of 10,001 pounds or more.
- Passenger Capacity:
- Operating a vehicle designed to transport 9 to 15 passengers for compensation (beyond 75 air miles).
- Operating a vehicle designed to transport 16 or more passengers (even if not for pay).
- Hazardous Materials: Transporting hazardous materials that require your vehicle to display a placard.
- Interstate Commerce: Driving across state lines (this generally applies to most CDL holders).

What happens during the DOT physical exam?
At a DOT physical exam, an Access Medical Clinic provider will review your prospective employee’s health history and perform a physical exam
Once complete, the prospective employee and the provider will discuss findings, including any potential hazards that were identified, and make a determination regarding their medical certificate and qualifications.
