Medical Directors

Medical directors serve a critical – and legally required – role at all nursing, long-term care, and assisted living facilities. Medical directors provide overall clinical leadership and medical oversight to ensure residents receive high-quality care in compliance with regulations. Not only does this role serve as a chief medical advisor to facility clinicians and staff, they are also responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing medical policies, quality initiatives, and clinical standards across the facility.

• Provide medical leadership and oversight of all clinical care and services delivered within the facility.
• Ensure compliance with CMS Conditions of Participation, state regulations, and applicable professional standards.
• Establish, review, and enforce clinical policies, protocols, and standards of care.
• Lead and actively participate in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) activities, including review of outcomes, adverse events, and corrective actions.
• Oversee infection prevention and control programs, outbreak response, and coordination with public health authorities.
• Collaborate with attending physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing leadership, and interdisciplinary teams to ensure coordinated, effective care.
• Participate in credentialing, privileging, and performance oversight of medical providers.
• Serve as a clinical resource for complex cases, ethical issues, and escalated resident or family concerns.
• Support risk management efforts, regulatory surveys, audits, and corrective action plans.
• Provide education and guidance to clinical staff on best practices, regulatory changes, and quality improvement initiatives.
• Maintain regular on-site presence and availability consistent with facility needs and regulatory expectations.
